The Cambridge Philosophical Society is delighted to welcome Professor John Carr as the new incoming President of the Society, taking over from Professor Lindsay Greer. Professor John Carr is Professor of Plant Virology in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Cambridge.

John's research interests include viral subversion of plant resistance, viral gene expression, plant-virus-insect vector interactions, and the effects of virus infection on interactions of plants with beneficial insects such as pollinators. John has collaborated extensively with colleagues in sub-Saharan Africa on various crop disease problems caused by viruses vectored by insects. Prior to working at Cambridge, John worked at the University of Utah Medical School in Salt Lake City, The Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University in New Jersey and Cornell University's Department of Plant Pathology in Ithaca, New York.

John is a Professorial Fellow at Corpus Christi College, graduate tutor, and postgraduate admissions adviser (Sciences) at the College, and was Vice President of the College from 2018–2022.
