CPS Fellows enjoyed a visit the AZ Discovery Centre at AstraZeneca’s global R&D headquarters in Cambridge on Wednesday 30 September, as part of our programme of membership visits held throughout the year.

Fellows were given a guided tour of the AstraZeneca Discovery Centre (DISC) in Cambridge, part of AstraZeneca’s global R&D headquarters located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. During the visit the drug discovery process was explained in detail, along with the type of research that takes place at the Discovery Centre, as well as how AstraZeneca works to translate science into medicines for patients.

Fellows also learned more about the DISC building itself, which officially opened in 2021 and is one of the most significant laboratory buildings in Europe. Designed as a highly collaborative, purpose-built research facility, it brings together scientists from across disciplines in an environment created to support innovation. The building is also notable for its strong focus on sustainability, with features designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact, making it an impressive example of modern architecture. Further information is available here.

As a benefit of membership of the CPS, members take part in free visits throughout the year to various science related locations across the UK. To join the Cambridge Philosophical Society visit our membership page here
