As the oldest scientific society in Cambridge and a registered charity, the Cambridge Philosophical Society (CPS) supports Research Fellowships and PhD Studentships, as well as makes grants to its members within the Cambridge scientific community. These include 3-year Henslow Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers and 3-year Sedgwick PhD Studentships, as well as short-term Research Studentships and Travel Grants.

John Hancock, a PhD candidate at Christ’s College has been a member of the Cambridge Philosophical Society since October 2021.His research is focused on how neurons interact with immune cells in glioblastoma (a deadly brain cancer) and how this interaction can be utilised for new therapeutic opportunities. Currently, glioblastoma is incurable and these patients only have 14-17 months to live after diagnosis, with the standard of care not having any change in over 20 years.

John applied to the CPS for a travel grant to enable him to attend 7th Quadrennial Meeting of the World Federation of Neuro-Oncology Societies in Honolulu, Hawaii in November 2025. The grant that he received enabled him to present his work, and also to network.

He said:

“I am deeply grateful for the support given as without it I would have been unable to attend this meeting. I met with leaders in the field while I was there and am planning on a career in neuro-oncology. Maybe, one day, I will find a cure for glioblastoma”
