Theo Weinberger works in the Quantum Matter group at the Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics, and is the Henslow Fellow at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge. Theo also completed his PhD within the department, where his doctoral research focused on the properties of strongly correlated quantum materials.
The control and manipulation of electrons within solids provides huge scope for technological progress. While standard metals consist of a high-density sea of nearly independent electrons, introducing strong interactions, and thereby correlations, between these electrons unlocks rich, emergent many-body physics. Because these 'quantum materials' are combinatorially vast and highly tuneable, they provide an expansive landscape for discovery. By exploring these complex systems, Theo's research aims to underpin next-generation technologies, ranging from loss-free power transmission and high-field fusion magnets to novel quantum computing devices.
Theo’s work primarily investigates the emergent phenomena that arise from these interactions. Foremost among such states is unconventional superconductivity. In a superconductor, electrons pair up to conduct electricity with zero resistance, enabling lossless energy transmission. However, this is predominantly a low-temperature effect that only occurs close to absolute zero. Unconventional superconductors still elude description by standard condensed matter theories, yet their desirable properties could pave the way for robust, high-temperature, and magnetic-field-resilient superconductivity. Theo also explores other novel correlated phases, including newly discovered states of magnetism such as altermagnetism, which holds promise for highly efficient spintronic technologies. Ultimately, his research seeks to understand these phenomena so that materials exhibiting these properties can be predicted and tuned into useful quantum devices.
